- New Spanish church stresses simplicity.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-31816 NEW SPANISH CHURCH STRESSES SIMPLICITY VITORIA, Spain -- A plain curving wall and gently pitched roof are marks of simplicity reflected in the interior of the new Roman Catholic Church of the Coronation of Our Lady at Vitoria, Spain. The solid structure, of local stone exterior and white concrete-walled interior, has a low block altar dominated by a dramatic, modernistic crucifix hanging on slender wires. With its bell-tower, which rises on four slim concrete columns, the church stands in sharp contrast to more conventional surrounding structures. The church is one of several featured in the new Holt, Rinehart and Winston volume, “New Churches of Europe,” by G.E. Kidder Smith, architectural historian and photographer. - Lapland church memorial to Hammarskjold.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-31747 LAPLAND CHURCH MEMORIAL TO HAMMARSKJOLD LAPLAND -- A suggestion proposed by a Laplander mountain guide, Andreas Labba (top), has been realized in the form of a small church built in the wild northern Scandinavia country and dedicated to the memory of Dag Hammarskjold, Secretary-General of the United Nations who died in a plane crash in 1961. A friend and companion of the noted world figure on many hikes into the Lapland mountains, Mr. Labba traveled to Uppsala, Sweden, for Mr. Hammarskjold’s funeral and made his idea known. Institutions, firm and individuals -- mostly in Lapland -- responded with funds and the small church, built in the triangular form of a Lapp hut, was raised. Artistic silverwork, such as candlesticks and communion dishes, were given to the church by friends of Mr. Hammarskjold. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (2-NY-10-D-64-NBM)
