- Shakespeare and his church.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-30886 SHAKESPEARE AND HIS CHURCH Shakespeare’s church. Holy Trinity church at Stratford-on-Avon is where William Shakespeare was baptized and where he is buried. The 400th anniversary of his birth on April 23 was marked throughout the world. Many churchmen and church publications cited religious aspects of his work. In England, the British post office broke with tradition and placed his picture alongside Queen Elizabeth’s on a series of commemorative stamps. Previously, illustrations on postage were restricted to royalty. The influence of Shakespeare was perhaps epitomized in an NBC-TV “special” (April 26) in which films of the places associated with his life and plays were featured. It was called “Shakespeare: Soul of an Age.” Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (IN-NY-4C-64-W)

- First electric fixture in any church.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-31339 FIRST ELECTRIC FIXTURE IN ANY CHURCH ROSELLE, N.J. -- This is the first electric fixture installed in a church anywhere in the world. Thomas A. Edison called it an “electrolier” and in 1883 donated it to First Presbyterian church of Roselle, N.J., after convincing its pastor that it would not be “sacrilegious” to have electric lights in the sanctuary. The fixture is shown (left) after it was damaged in a 1949 fire that destroyed the church. The church was re-built, but the fixture remained in storage until about six months ago when it was restored (right) by Lightolier in Jersey City, N.J. Plans for its restoration were drawn up by Mayor Warren Stadden of Roselle, a practicing architect and engineer. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (L-7E-64-NAB)

The president of the American Institute of Architects, Geoffrey N. Lawford, says architects “are finding increased encouragement in translating traditional building symbols and forms into meaningful contemporary terms” through religious structures. The New York Chapter of the AIA in January held a major exhibit on “Churches and Temples: Postwar Architecture” at a NYC gallery. Among the 21 religious structures featured were: (upper left) the “23 de Ener” (23rd of January) Roman Catholic church in Caracas, Venezuela, which utilizes a swooping design; the Lansing (Ill.) Presbyterian church (upper right), with sharp lines emphasizing man’s direct relationship to God; St. Patrick’s Catholic church in Oklahoma City, Okla., (lower left) an example of paraboloid, geometric design, and (lower right), a structure called the “Roofless Church,” a memorial to the Rappites, a utopian religious community which was founded in New Harmony, Ind., some 150 years ago. - New Spanish church stresses simplicity.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-31816 NEW SPANISH CHURCH STRESSES SIMPLICITY VITORIA, Spain -- A plain curving wall and gently pitched roof are marks of simplicity reflected in the interior of the new Roman Catholic Church of the Coronation of Our Lady at Vitoria, Spain. The solid structure, of local stone exterior and white concrete-walled interior, has a low block altar dominated by a dramatic, modernistic crucifix hanging on slender wires. With its bell-tower, which rises on four slim concrete columns, the church stands in sharp contrast to more conventional surrounding structures. The church is one of several featured in the new Holt, Rinehart and Winston volume, “New Churches of Europe,” by G.E. Kidder Smith, architectural historian and photographer.
