- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: CHURCH OF THE GENERALS #3517 BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- Historic St. John’s Protestant Episcopal church here, founded in 1834, is known as the “Church of the Generals” because of the famous military men who have worshipped here while stationed at nearby Fort Hamilton. Gen. Robert E. Lee, commander-in-chief of the Confederate Armies, was a vestryman from 1942-44 when he was assigned to Hamilton as a major. On April 29, 1849, Gen. Thomas J. (Stonewall) Jackson was baptized there by the Rev. M. Schofield, second rector of the church. Jackson also was a major at the time. The present rector is the Rev. Louis S. Luisa. - Title
- North Church of Paul Revere fame.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: EDITORS: April 18 marks the anniversary of the famous “Ride of Paul Revere” which occurred in 1775. NORTH CHURCH OF PAUL REVERE FAME #1529 BOSTON -- The oldest church in this city, Christ Protestant Episcopal Church is one of the historical landmarks of the United States; for it was here, on April 19, 1775, from its tall steeple, that the signal lantern told Paul Revere of the march of the British troops to Lexington and Concord. The famous phrase, “One if by land, two if by sea” referred to those lanterns. At that time the edifice was known as Old North Church. It was erected 1723 and has been used practically without interruption since the last Sunday in December of that year except for a period during the Revolution when the church was closed “by military necessity.” (one of a series) Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (EM-BOST-MES-3A-6-ROTO-A-E-O)

- Solace for the weary.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: SOLACE FOR THE WEARY #3393 LOS ANGELES -- Grace Cathedral’s Wayside Shrine of St. Francis -- a tiny chapel seating only 12 persons -- is open here 24 hours a day for those seeking rest and spiritual meditation. A year ago it was a shabby little shack, but Canon Charles Shreve dreamed of making it a place of refuge for men and women of all religions and creeds. The Shrine cost $3,000, all of it contributed within a space of two weeks. John de Rosen, famous muralist, after spending an hour in the Shrine, offered to paint the meeting of St. Francis and the beggar over the altar free of charge.
