INTERFAITH CEREMONY MARKS 35th ANNIVERSARY OF DACHAU LIBERATION
ALBANY, N.Y.--During a recent ceremony in Albany, N.Y., marking the
35th anniversary of the liberation of Dachau Concentration Camp on April 29, 1945,
Oliver D. Collins, left, a U.S. Army Infantry squad leader
during World War II, talks with Julian Noga--wearing his prison
uniform--one of the survivors he helped free.
In a moving expression of solidarity, Jews and Polish
Christians who survived Dachau, joined hands at the service,
in a moment of silent prayer. Prayers and messages from Protestant,
Catholic and Jewish clergy were included and a special Hebrew prayer
was said by Rabbi Martin Norden, of the local Temple Israel -- himself
a survivor of Buchenwald. The commemorants were reminded by Rabbi
Paul B. Silton, of the same synagogue, of the words of Elie Wiesel:
"Not all of the victims were Jews. But all of the Jews were victims."
He said the greatest memorial to the 12 million Jewish and Christian
victims of Hitler's atrocities would be to bring to justice the Nazi
war criminals remaining free in the U.S.
